We’re Not Out of the Woods Yet

We’re not out of the woods yet. Not by a long shot. Joe Biden is a weak President. Now don’t get me wrong. He’s a decent man on the right side of sanity. Given what we’ve been through for the past four years, that’s saying a lot.

The problem is Joe’s a lover, not a fighter. His other problem is that there are a bunch of greedy, power-hungry, money-grubbers still in power from our national legislative leadership to our local boards of supervisors. Simply put, the Republican Party has become the greatest threat to our democracy.

Mitch McConnell took six weeks to acknowledge that over 7 million more citizens voted for Biden than for their self proclaimed Niro emperor. Senator Lindsey Graham told Fox News’ Sean Hannity, “We have to stop people from voting so Republicans can win.”

It gets worse, much worse. Texas Attorney General filed an absurd lawsuit demanding the Supreme Court Justices overturn the election results in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. As ludicrous as that was, that was not the end of the attempted coup. Consider that 126 Republican congressmen out of 196 Republican members signed onto the Amicus Brief. That’s over two-thirds of the total Republicans in the House of Congress. This democracy is a fragile thing, and it’s under assault from the Republican Party.

We should all be thankful that the judiciary saved our democracy. It wasn’t your vote, although that helped. The Republicans were insistent that your vote should not count simply because it was not cast for them. Make no mistake that only a self-destructing Niro and the thin line of the judiciary stood between you and a fragile form of government by the people and for the people.

What can we do to protect our democracy? It’s going to take more than the undemanding act of voting once in a while when we’re not otherwise busy. This is a coup. Republicans can no longer be trusted to protect our freedoms. As a group, they are greedy and power-hungry. They have demonstrated that they are willing to do what is necessary to suppress the vote in order to win. Authoritarianism has a way of sneaking up on you. A Venezuelan friend of mine who experienced what happened in her country with the dictator Hugo Chavez told me that before you even realize what is happening Niro, and his confederates are here.

Trump came to power on the anger of the remnants of the Civil War. That regiment is still here in groups like the Proud Boys. Are you willing to be governed by powers who endorse vigilante groups and celebrate white power? If not it’s going to take more than passively casting a ballot.

Every freedom-loving group must begin right now to pass laws in every state protecting the right of citizens to vote. Every group must begin now to organize politically on a local level. Organizing begins with local Registrars and Electoral Boards. We must defeat local and state representatives who refuse to protect the right of every person to vote. As we lose our rights the infection of tyranny begins at the local level. Vote out local supervisors and city council members who refuse to take this coup effort seriously. Organize effectively, contribute generously, and most of all, be aware, and stay vigilant. The Republican Party wants to steal your freedom, your money, your power, and your vote.

This coup attempt is serious. If we fail to treat this attempted coup with the outrage it demands, the threat cannot be held in check. Ben Franklin is to have said to a passer-by who asked what we had; we had a republic if we could keep it. Can we keep it? Are you ready to step up? If not you, then who?
